Admission
The Honors Program is highly selective. Primarily, invitations are issued to those who excel academically in high school or in our competitive scholarships. Others may be invited to apply based on a recommendation from an admissions representative or faculty member.
“I chose the Honors Program because I wanted to be around driven, like-minded students. What I got was a huge extended family of people who push me to be a better person and classes that stretch my mind and imagination.”
— Jenna Leazott ’18
While most participants enter the program immediately, motivated students who demonstrate academic excellence may begin as second-semester freshmen or sophomores. That includes transfer students with a GPA of 3.25 or higher.
If you don’t meet certain criteria, you may still apply for consideration through Professor Neil Scharnick, Director of the Honors Program: nscharnick@91ciba.com.
The following norms for admission to the Honors Program are offered only as guidelines. Highly motivated and ambitious students who do not meet particular criteria are encouraged to apply for consideration through the Honors Program Director.
First-Year Students
Invitations to apply to join the Honors Program will go primarily to students who present outstanding high school credentials (ACT scores, GPA, or class rank, for example), and/or excel in Carthage’s competitive scholarships. Additional students will be invited to apply upon the recommendation of an admissions representative. Admission into the Honors Program is handled on a rolling basis, so students are encouraged to apply to Carthage early.
Continuing Students
Students admitted to the Honors Program during their first or second year of study at Carthage typically have maintained at least a 3.25 Carthage GPA, have demonstrated excellence in one or more courses, have been recommended for the Honors Program by one or more instructors, and have been interviewed by the Honors Program Director. Students will be asked to complete a written application.
Transfer Students
The Carthage Honors Program does accept outstanding transfer students. Individuals admitted to the Honors Program as new transfer students typically have maintained a college GPA of at least 3.25, have demonstrated excellence in one or more courses, have been recommended for the Honors Program by an admissions representative, and have been interviewed by the Honors Program Director.
